Materials appropriate for Supplements to The Journal of Nutrition include:
A multi-authored and multi-perspective workshop or group review may be submitted as single-manuscript report. All other supplement publications are expected to contain a minimum of 3 articles that either address a topic from different viewpoints or subdivide a complex topic into component parts. Supplement manuscripts must be fully developed articles; The Journal of Nutrition will not accept manuscripts in an Expanded or Extended Abstract format. The proceedings of meetings may include a separate abstracts section when the proceedings include a minimum of 6 full-length manuscripts. Please note that an abstract within an abstract section will not have an individual journal citation, but will be a component of the citable abstract section. Single-manuscript reviews which do not originate from a workshop should be submitted as Critical Reviews rather than supplements.
Supplement publication proposals must be approved by The Journal of Nutrition Editor, and all supplement manuscripts will undergo peer review.
Proposals for the publication of meeting proceedings must be submitted within two months of the date on which the meeting was held. However, organizers are strongly encouraged to submit proposals well in advance of the meeting to allow time for organizers and authors to receive information on publication requirements and for authors to submit manuscripts in a timely manner. To expedite the publication process, it is recommended that authors be asked to provide organizers with a copy of the completed manuscript at the time of the meeting and to submit the manuscript to the Journal immediately after the meeting.
The deadline for submission of manuscripts is 4 months after the date of the meeting.
If a supplement will not include manuscripts resulting from or summarizing presentations given at a meeting, conference or workshop, the deadline for the submission of manuscripts is 4 months after the date the supplement is approved, unless another deadline is agreed upon.
Supplement publications will be assessed page charges to help offset the costs of editorial review and publication. Supplements are distributed in print and electronic formats to all subscribers of The Journal of Nutrition. The print version of a supplement is mailed with a regular monthly issue of JN; the electronic version of a supplement is posted online at http://jn.nutrition.org, the site of The Journal of Nutrition Online. Arrangements can be made for additional distribution of supplement publications and/or additional print runs with custom covers or special binding.
Supplement publications are generally printed and mailed within seven to nine months from receipt of manuscripts, provided manuscripts are prepared according to The Journal of Nutrition guidelines. Smaller supplement publications, those less than 96-pages in length, are bound within a regular issue of JN. If it is necessary for The Journal of Nutrition staff to contact authors or organizers regarding missing information or improperly formatted manuscripts or figures, publication could be delayed.
Approval of Supplement Publications: organizers seeking to publish material in a supplement to The Journal of Nutrition should provide the following information:
Manuscript Preparation and Submission: Information on manuscript preparation is available online at http://www.nutrition.org/misc/ifora.shtml. Please note, however, that the color reproduction cost for supplement publications is $800 per page, not $400 per figure. Supplement manuscripts must be submitted using The Journal of Nutrition online submission program at: http://submit.nutrition.org/. Each supplement publication will be assigned a unique identifier, which must be provided during the manuscript submission process.
Manuscript review: after submission to the JN editorial office, all supplement manuscripts will undergo peer review. The JN Editor retains the right to return manuscripts to authors for revision and may refuse to accept any manuscript not considered suitable for publication in The Journal of Nutrition. In addition to this review process, the organizing group may elect to conduct a review of manuscripts before they are submitted to the JN editorial office. This is not required and will not replace the review by the JN editorial office, but in some instances it could help to expedite the overall review and publication process.
Responsibilities of supplement publication coordinator:
Costs of Publication: supplement organizers are required to pay page charges of $250 per published page to help defray the costs of publication. Supplement organizers are charged nominal rates for additional copies of supplements or reprints of articles within a sponsored supplement. Rates are dependent on the length of each copy and the number of copies ordered. Rates for additional copies will be quoted upon request. Additional charges are assessed for the reproduction of color figures ($800 per page), excessive editorial or author alterations, and for the preparation of camera ready art if figures are not supplied in the correct format.
