nutrition.org -- Guide for Authors, Online Supporting Informaton
ONLINE SUPPORTING MATERIAL (OSM). Unusually lengthy descriptions of experimental procedures, extensive data, extra figures, etc. may be
published as online-only attachments to published articles. For example, if several primers were used, they should be listed in a supplemental table.
CONSORT flow diagrams should be presented as supplemental figures. OSM should be
integral to the manuscript but impractical to include in the printed article. References to the availability of supplemental data on authors' websites will
not be included in published articles.
Material to be published as OSM should be included with the original manuscript submission. Please follow these instructions:
- Mention in the cover letter that OSM is included with the submission
and mark the appropriate box on the manuscript submission screen (see sample screen shot).
- The manuscript title must include a footnote that gives information on the availability of online supporting material with the online posting of the published article at
http://jn.nutrition.org.
Examples of possible formats for the footnote are:
- 1 A full list of subregions and included countries, as well as detailed cost figures, are available as Online Supporting Material with the online posting of this paper at http://jn.nutrition.org.
- 1 Supplemental Tables 1-10 are available as Online Supporting Material with the online posting of this paper at http://jn.nutrition.org
- The top of all OSM pages should have an "Online Supporting Material" header.
- OSM pages should NOT have page or line numbers.
- Tables and figures should be designated Supplemental Table 1, Supplemental Table 2, Supplemental Figure 1, etc. and should be called out as such parenthetically in the text when you refer to them. All OSM posted must be called out in the text.
- Supplemental tables should be single spaced but otherwise in Journal of Nutrition format.
- Supplemental figure legends should be single spaced immediately under the supplemental figure but otherwise in Journal of Nutrition format.
- Supplemental text can be single spaced but otherwise must be in Journal of Nutrition format.
- If the citations in the OSM do not appear elsewhere in the printed paper, they should NOT be added to the paper's Literature Cited section. Instead, prepare a Supplemental Literature Cited section [beginning with (1), (2), etc.] and include it at the end of supplemental materials.
- For new manuscript submissions, include a copy of the OSM at the end of the manuscript PDF file, after the references, tables, and figures for use by reviewers and editors. Upload OSM video files as supplemental files; see instructions below regarding size and format.
- For revised manuscript submissions, include the OSM at the end of the Word file, after references, tables, and figure legends for use by reviewers and editors. Also, convert OSM files to PDF files and upload as supplemental files in the file upload area. Please check the conversion to make sure format and content is accurate. OSM files for posting must be in standard Journal of Nutrition format, with the exceptions noted above. OSM video files should be submitted in the native format. To avoid excessive delays in downloading the files, videos should be no more than 5 MB in size and 60 seconds in length. Authors are encouraged to use QuickTime's "compress" option when preparing files to help control file size.
