Having the following information ready before starting your submission will save time:
- Cover letter:
A letter of submission from the corresponding author is required. The cover letter must include the following information:
- Financial or other contractual agreements that might cause conflicts of interest or be perceived as causing conflicts of interest. (Note: In addition, all authors must declare all sources of funding for research reported in their manuscript and disclose all potential conflicts of interest on the manuscript title page).
- Any existing financial arrangement between an author and a company whose product figures prominently in the submitted manuscript must be brought to the attention of the editor.
- Other relevant information not specified elsewhere, such as a statement about any work being concurrently published or reviewed that is relevant to the review of the manuscript being submitted to The Journal of Nutrition (such materials may be submitted as Supplementary files).
The cover letter must also include the following assurances:
- That the corresponding author and all of the authors have read and approved the final submitted manuscript
- That no portion of the work has been or is currently under consideration for publication elsewhere
- That no portion of the manuscript other than the abstract has been published or posted on the Internet.
Please do not include this cover letter in your manuscript file.
- Color figures. Indicate: (1) whether color figures are included in the manuscript, (2) which figure(s) should be printed in color, and (3) agreement to pay color reproduction costs in the amount of $400 per figure.
- Manuscript word count, table and figure counts: during the online submission process you will be asked to provide information on the word count for the entire manuscript, title through references, and the numbers of figures and tables.
- Manuscript Digital Files
- Initial Submission: prepare your manuscript, including tables, in Word 6.0 or later, saving the file in the .doc format (please note: the Word 2007 .docx format is not accepted). Convert manuscript Word file and figure files to pdf files. Create a single pdf file containing manuscript text, tables and figures, and submit this single pdf using the online manuscript submission program. If online supporting material is included with submission, append online supporting material to the end of the pdf file; clearly label online supporting material on each page.
-
Online Supporting Material (OSM) in Initial Submissions: For initial manuscript submissions, a clearly-labeled copy of the online supporting material (OSM) should be included at the end of the manuscript pdf file, after the references, tables and figures. OSM pages must be marked with an "Online Supporting Material" header on each page. Online-only figures and tables should be labeled "Supplemental Figure 1", "Supplemental Table 1", etc.
- Revised Manuscript Submissions and Supplement Manuscript Submissions:
Submit manuscript text, including tables, in Word 6.0 or later .doc file (please note: the Word 2007 .docx file format is not accepted); tables must be included in the text file; do not submit tables in separate files. Submit each figure in a separate file. Preferred formats for image (figure) files are PDF, JPEG, TIFF or EPS. Files must conform to the following minimum resolution specifications: Line art:1000 dpi; Combination Halftones: 600 dpi (grayscale or color images and type); Halftones: 300 dpi (grayscale or color with no type or lettering). When saving as a JPEG file use maximum quality/minimum compression.
-
Online Supporting Material (OSM) in Revised Manuscript Submissions: Include the OSM at the end of the Word file, after references, tables and figure legends. Figures which are part of the regular manuscript submission and not part of OSM must be loaded as separate files. OSM pages must be marked with an "Online Supporting Material" header on each page. Online-only figures and tables should be labeled "Supplemental Figure 1", "Supplemental Table 1", etc. In addition to including online supporting material at the end of the manuscript file as indicated above, upload the OSM in PDF format as supplemental file(s) in the file upload area. OSM files will not be edited so please be sure that The Journal of Nutrition format is used and that the pdf files are accurate.
Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT) and Word (DOC) files can be acceptable if properly prepared and submitted in their native format. When creating print quality files in MS Office applications follow these general guidelines:
- Do not use pattern or textured fills in graphics. Instead, use solid fills or percentage screens that will be effectively converted to vector images during file conversion.
- Artwork placed with any MS Office application should be of acceptable minimum resolution for print production: 300 dpi for halftones, 600 dpi for combinations and 1000 dpi for line art.
- Authors should only use Times, Times Roman, Courier, Helvetica and/or Arial fonts, this will increase our chances of properly opening and retaining formatting.
- When inserting pictures/images into files, be sure to select “insert” and not “insert link”, which will not properly embed the hi-res image into the MS Office file.
- Do not reduce or enlarge the images after placement within the MS Office file otherwise image quality will be affected.
- A separate file should be submitted for each figure. Make sure that any multipanel figures (i.e., figures with parts labeled a, b, c, d, etc.) are assembled into one file. Rather than sending four files (Fig1a, Fig1b, Fig1c, Fig1d) the four parts should be assembled into one piece and supplied as one file.
- Image Resolution
Files must conform to the following minimum resolution specifications:
- Line art:1000 dpi
- Combination Halftones: 600 dpi (grayscale or color images and type)
- Halftones: 300 dpi (grayscale or color with no type or lettering)
- Fonts
It is recommended to use standard fonts in order to avoid potential problems with font substitution or embedding problems. Acceptable fonts include Arial, Helvetica, Times Roman, Symbol, Mathematical PI, and European PI. All other fonts, if not embedded, may be replaced, resulting in data loss or realignment.
- Color Space
All digital art, including black and white figures, submitted must be bitmap (Monochrome), grayscale, RGB or CMYK. Color files should be supplied in RGB color whenever possible and should have an ICC profile applied. RGB best utilizes the color projection capabilities of computer display devices and it has become the standard color space for displaying images for the online journal, authors are strongly encouraged to submit color figures in RGB format. Note that the RGB color space is significantly larger than the process CMYK color space. Therefore, depending upon the content of the image, color shifts may occur when converting to CMYK and appear in print if colors in the original image are outside the process CMYK gamut.

Please note the following:
- Each figure must be in a separate file. Make sure that any multipanel figures (i.e., figures with parts labeled a, b, c, d, etc.) are assembled into one file. Rather than sending four files (Fig1a, Fig1b, Fig1c, Fig1d) the four parts should be assembled into one piece and supplied as one file.
- Figures cannot be embedded in text files.
- Each figure file should be clearly identified by figure number and panel letter, if appropriate, in the space provided on the file upload screen.
- If a figure is very small in the system-generated pdf file, the resolution of the figure file was not high enough. A higher resolution figure should be uploaded before the pdf is approved.
- Tables must be included in the text file; do not submit tables in separate files.
- Authors should only use Times, Times Roman, Courier, Helvetica and/or Arial fonts in manuscript, tables and figures.
Authors are requested to create and keep high-resolution print copies of figures, in the event they are needed for publication purposes.
- Supplemental File Upload:
Supplemental files for upload may include articles published/in press elsewhere, online supporting material (OSM), cover art submissions, reports or technical briefs related to manuscript submission, figure source files, questionnaires, permissions, videos, etc.
- Cover Images: Authors are invited to submit color images for use on The Journal of Nutrition cover. Images can be figures included in a submitted manuscript, images that are representative of research reported in a submitted manuscript, or images that illustrate an aspect of nutrition research in general. Images can be submitted in one of the following ways: (1) online during the manuscript submission process: load as a Supplemental Files and, on file upload page, indicate the file is a cover art submission; (2) by email to the JN Editor, Dr. Catharine Ross: acr6@psu.edu; or (3) large files may be sent on CD-ROM or Zip disk by a traceable delivery method to the JN Editorial office: Dr. A. Catharine Ross, The Journal of Nutrition Editorial Office, Department of Nutritional Sciences, The Pennsylvania State University, 126-S Henderson Building, University Park, PA 16802. Please include the manuscript number in all correspondence.
