TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS

RESEARCH ARTICLES. Reports of original research of interest to the general community of nutritional scientists will be published as research articles. The Journal of Nutrition will give priority to mechanistic studies in animals, cells or human populations that advance the understanding of nutrient requirements, utilization, and/or function. For manuscripts in the areas of nutritional epidemiology and community and international nutrition, priority will be given to manuscripts based on interventions or novel analysis of observational studies conducted in large, population-representative groups.

Please note that manuscripts that are primarily concerned with foods, and/or natural products from the standpoint of composition, nutrient concentrations, specialty cultivars and crop breeding, or manuscripts in which the nutritional relevance of the model under study in uncertain are generally not considered well suited for review by The Journal of Nutrition. Manuscripts based on studies of a strictly observational nature are generally not reviewed. Manuscripts addressing clinical and medical nutrition are better suited for review by a journal specializing in these subjects.

At the time of manuscript submission, authors are asked to select one of ten broad categories (Table of Contents Subject Headings) under which papers are published in The Journal of Nutrition. These categories have been updated recently to better reflect the scope of The Journal of Nutrition. Manuscripts related to nutrition in any species may be submitted.

The Subject Headings are:

Biochemical, Molecular, and Genetic Mechanisms in Nutrition
Nutrient Physiology, Metabolism, and Nutrient-Nutrient Interactions
Nutrition and Disease
Nutrient Requirements and Optimal Nutrition
Nutritional Epidemiology
Community and International Nutrition
Nutritional Toxicology
Nutritional Immunology
Ingestive Behavior and Nutritional Neurosciences
Nutritional Methodologies and Mathematical Modeling
All of the manuscripts submitted to The Journal of Nutrition will undergo editorial review.

REVIEWS. Most reviews published in The Journal of Nutrition will be part of a series entitled "Recent Advances in Nutritional Sciences," submitted in response to invitations by the Reviews Editor. These reviews will be published in a four-page1 format and provide a recent rather than historical review of the subject matter. More comprehensive reviews and commentaries are published as "Critical Reviews." Critical Reviews are meant to address and discuss published literature. They are not meant for presentation of new Systematic Reviews, or an extensive analysis or reanalysis of data. The Journal of Nutrition will review suitable systemic reviews as regular research papers. Critical Reviews may be invited by the Editor or initiated by authors. For author-initiated reviews, it is strongly advised that an outline of the proposed review be submitted to the Reviews Editor prior to writing so that suitability for The Journal of Nutrition and the scope of the review can be determined before submission. The Journal of Nutrition does not publish comprehensive or categorical reviews of the literature, only the focused reviews as described above.

ISSUES AND OPINIONS. Short essays presenting scientific analyses and viewpoints on issues in nutrition may be submitted. These articles are limited to three printed Journal pages1. Additional Online Supporting Material may be included, if essential.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Letters to the Editor may be submitted. Letters are expected to provide substantive comments on papers published in The Journal of Nutrition in the six months prior to the time a letter is submitted, or other subjects that are of broad interest to the nutrition research community. Both the letter and a reply, if appropriate, are published together whenever possible. Letters, including up to 8 references, are limited to one Journal page1 and will be reviewed prior to acceptance.

BIOGRAPHIES AND HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES. Biographical manuscripts are invited by the Biographical and Historical Editor after consultation with the ASN History Committee, but suggestions of subjects and authors are welcomed. Authors of potential articles on some historical aspect of nutritional science should consult with the Biographical and Historical Editor prior to submission of a manuscript, concerning its appropriateness for The Journal. Fifty complimentary reprints will be provided to authors of Biographies and Historical Perspectives.

Biographical sketches, including the Literature Cited section, should be 2-4 published pages1 in length. Biographical manuscripts with more than 10 cited publications will not be accepted. A complete bibliography of the writings of the subject, if available, can be published as Online Supporting Material (see instructions for Online Supporting Material). A photograph of the subject should be uploaded or mailed to the ASN office.

COMMENTARIES. Commentaries relative to concurrently published papers containing noteworthy findings will be published at the invitation of the Editor. The Commentary section may also be used to present ASN-related articles on nutritional sciences and education.

OTHER. The Journal of Nutrition also publishes supplements, based on extensive reports of research, monographs, compendia, proceedings of symposia, etc. Proposals for supplements must be submitted in advance, and will be reviewed for appropriateness by the Editor and the ASN Council. Depending on length, accepted Supplements will be separately bound or published within a regular issue in a Supplement section. One or more guest editors, approved by the Editor and Council, serve as the editor(s) for each Supplement issue. Initial contact to submit a Supplement proposal and arrange to cover the cost of publication should be directed to ASN headquarters. For additional information, see ""General Information on The Journal of Nutrition Supplement Publications" or contact Karen King, Director of Publications, American Society for Nutrition, 9650 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20814. Tel: 301-634-7053; Fax: 301-634-7892; email: kking@nutrition.org

1 For Letters to the Editor, please use the following guidelines to limit length to one published page: letters comprised of text and up to 8 references should not exceed 6570 characters plus spaces; letters comprised of text, up to 8 references and one figure should not exceed 5030 characters plus spaces. To estimate the published length of RANS and other articles, see the "Guide for Authors' Use in Estimating Length".
