ERRATUM

Burckhardt P (2008). The effect of the alkali load of mineral water on bone metabolism: interventional studies. J Nutr. 138:435S–437S.

As published, Table 1 contains 2 errors that are crucial to the message of this paper. Differences in the PRAL values, especially positive (acid) values versus negative (basic) values, have profound effects on the outcome of the trials, as indicated by changes in the bone resorption marker, CTX, and also in PTH and urinary calcium.

TABLE 1 Overview of 5 interventional trials with mineral water in humans: effect on markers of bone resorption (CTX) and plasma PTH or urinary calcium

 
Negative (–) instead of positive (+) symbols were printed in the last line of the PRAL column (–13.8 instead of +13.8), and in the 6th line (–13.1 instead of +13.1).

The column head, Effect on urinary CTX, was incorrect and an additional footnote was needed.

The corrected table is printed below:
