Supplement: 7th Amino Acid Assessment Workshop

Preface1

This workshop is the seventh in a series of AAAWs (Amino Acid Assessment Workshops) designed to continue a dialogue among experts in amino acid nutrition, metabolism, cell and molecular geology, toxicology, and regulation/policy, with the objective of establishing a framework for assessing and predicting the consequences of differing levels of amino acid intake(s) in humans under various conditions. The workshops have been sponsored by the International Council on Amino Acid Science (ICAAS; Belgium) from the beginning. The first three workshops [Tokyo, 2001; Hawaii, 2002 (1); and Nice, 2003 (2)] focused on the metabolism, mechanism of action, and function of amino acids in general, at the intakes needed to meet physiological requirements and at elevated supranutritional levels. The focus then shifted to detailed consideration of specific amino acid groups: branched-chain amino acids [Kobe, 2004 (3)]; sulfur-containing amino acids [Los Angeles, 2005 (4)]; and lysine/arginine [Budapest, 2006 (5)].

The 7th AAAW day 1 sessions, entitled "Consideration for Setting Upper Intake Levels for Nutrients" were cosponsored with the International Life Sciences Institute of Japan (ILSI Japan) and were an open session as a satellite symposium to The 5th International Conference on Nutrition and Aging by ILSI Japan. Day 2 sessions were for invitees only and focused on glutamine and proline, putting particular emphasis upon how the available data may be used to determine the upper level of the safe range of intake.

    FOOTNOTES

1 Published in a supplement to The Journal of Nutrition. Presented at the conference "The Seventh Workshop on the Assessment of Adequate and Safe Intake of Dietary Amino Acids" held November 2–3, 2007 in Tokyo. The conference was sponsored by the International Council on Amino Acid Science (ICAAS). The organizing committee for the workshop was David H. Baker, Dennis M. Bier, Luc A. Cynober, Yuzo Hayashi, Motoni Kadowaki, Sidney M. Morris, Jr., and Andrew G. Renwick. The supplement coordinators were David H. Baker, Dennis M. Bier, Luc A. Cynober, Motoni Kadowaki, Sidney M. Morris, Jr., and Andrew G. Renwick. Supplement coordinator disclosures: all of the coordinators received travel support from ICAAS to attend the workshop. Back
