During our phase-in period, we will accept electronic diskettes which will be loaded into the system at the Bethesda manuscripts receipt office. As the editorial staff will need some training time to work with a completely electronic system, we will require that a diskette accompany manuscripts submitted after September 1, 2001. These manuscripts should include the following modifications to the current Guide for Authors [J. Nutr. 131: 24 (2001) and online at http://www.nutrition.org].
Authors must submit five complete copies of the manuscript (including figures), a letter of submission, a signed copyright release form, and a diskette containing the manuscript and letter of submission in separate electronic files. Authors are encouraged to supply electronic versions of figures. Guidelines for the preparation of digital art are available at http://cjs.cadmus.com/da/. Each figure should be submitted in a separate file. The following file formats are acceptable: for manuscripts (with any embedded tables and figures), Word, WordPerfect, PDF; for figures, GIF, TIF, EPS, JPEG. PC-formatted diskettes and PC-readable CD-ROMs are preferred, but Apple/Macintosh-compatible diskettes are acceptable in most instances.
Our online Guide for Authors (http://www.nutrition.org) has been modified to include this change, and later this year instructions for submitting manuscripts directly into the online system will appear in the online Guide for Authors and in the print version of The Journal of Nutrition. There will be a phase-in period where some manuscripts will be directly entered into the system by the author, and other manuscripts submitted with diskettes will be loaded into the system at the Bethesda office. After January 1, 2002, manuscripts will not be accepted without the needed diskette. Electronic submission of figures may initially pose a problem for some authors, and for a currently undetermined period of time hard copies of figures will be accepted and scanned into the system at the Bethesda office.
No procedural change occurs without some problems arising, but this is a change that is needed at this time and is one that will benefit The Journal and the ASNS.
Respectfully submitted
