Figure 2. Red blood cell (RBC) and plasma folate levels of nonsupplemented
ovo-lacto vegetarians, low meat eaters and average Western diet
group during pregnancy. Plasma folate concentrations are geometric
means and SEM, and RBC folate concentrations are mean and
SEM Plasma as well as RBC folate concentrations represent
nonsupplemented women in the first, second and third trimesters for
ovo-lacto vegetarians (n = 13, 16 and 11), for
low meat eaters (n = 20, 29 and 23) and for average
Western diet group (n = 20, 24 and 28),
respectively. Significant differences in the total course of pregnancy
were found for plasma folate (ovo-lacto vegetarians versus average
Western diet group and low meat eaters versus average Western diet
group) and for RBC folate (ovo-lacto vegetarians versus average Western
diet group and ovo-lacto vegetarians versus low meat eaters).
