In an effort to accelerate the review process, decrease the time and expense associated with moving hard copy through the system, and simplify the process, scientific journals are rapidly adopting electronic submission of manuscripts. Following recommendations from The Journal of Nutrition editorial group and the Publications Management Committee, the ASNS Council selected the Bench>Press online manuscript submission system developed by HighWire Press.
Beginning January 1, 2002, manuscript submissions to The Journal of Nutrition should be made using the online system at http://submit.nutrition.org/. The submission site is also accessible via The Journal of Nutrition website at www.nutrition.org. Authors can submit manuscripts as Word, WordPerfect or PDF (Portable Document File) files. Acceptable graphic formats for figures include TIFF, GIF, EPS, and JPEG. Text and graphic files will be automatically converted by the system to PDF files for review purposes. Authors will be able to approve their submissions before they are formally entered into the system and they can check on the status of manuscripts during the review process. The system has been designed to ensure the security and confidentiality of authors, submissions, reviewers and reviews. We will continue to accept hard-copy manuscript submissions with diskettes on an interim basis for authors who are unable to use the online submission program. Instructions for hard-copy submissions can be found in the online "Instructions for Authors" (www.nutrition.org/misc/ifora.shtml).
Complete instructions for electronic submission will be included in the online "Instructions for Authors" (http://www.nutrition.org/misc/ifora.shtml) beginning January 1, 2002. The Bench>Press system includes detailed and easily-accessible help files, answers to "frequently asked questions" and a "Feedback" tab for submitting specific questions to technical staff.
The Journal of Nutrition is pleased to implement this new system to expedite manuscript submission and review and to further reduce publication times for submitted manuscripts.
