Vitamin E Activity of N-Methyl-ß-Tocopheramine in the Rat Reproduction Assay

J. G. Bieri and K. E. Mason

Laboratory of Nutrition and Endocrinology, National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland

A derivative of ß-tocopherol, dl,N-methyl-ß-tocopheramine, was compared with dl,a-tocopherol for its vitamin E potency in the rat resorption-gestation bioassay. A relative potency of 88.7 ± 7.4% (confidence limits of 77.1 to 107.4%, P = 0.05) confirms the essentially equivalent activity of dl,N-methyl-ß-tocopheramine and dl,a-tocopherol previously reported in the chick and also in the rat red cell hemolysis test.
