Intestinal Absorption and Body Retention of 47Ca in Rats: Evaluation of the method1

A method is described to study intestinal absorption and body retention of calcium in rats which requires the use of oral 47Ca and monitoring of body radioactivity by a whole body counter. Extrapolation to zero time of the monoexponential portion of the body retention curve of 47Ca was used to estimate net intestinal absorption. The slope of this curve provided an index of body retention of calcium. The validity of the estimate of intestinal absorption was confirmed by direct analysis of fecal, intestinal tract and carcass content of 47Ca after oral administration. Quantitative data on intestinal absorption and body retention of 47Ca after oral dose were obtained in various groups of normal rats of increasing weight and age. Growth and maturation had a depressing effect on both intestinal absorption and whole body retention of 47Ca.
