Weanling rats were fed a fat-free diet supplemented with highly purified linoleate and linolenate combined in several ratios. The fatty acid composition of lipids of liver, heart and adipose tissue was analyzed by gas chromatography. Increasing amounts of dietary linolenate suppressed the levels of arachidonate in tissue lipids, thus showing that the conversion of linoleate to arachidonate is inhibited by dietary linolenate.
