Vitamin D and the Intestinal Absorption of Iron and Cobalt1

The influence of vitamin D and dietary level of calcium on absorption of Fe and Co by chicks was investigated. Differences in absorption were estimated by administering the isotopes Fe59 and Co60 orally and intraperitoneally and measuring the quantity of isotope in the bone, blood and liver. Neither vitamin D nor dietary calcium level had any effect on the intraperitoneal dose. Vitamin D increased the amount of both isotopes which appeared in the blood, liver and bone when the isotopes were administered orally to chicks fed a low calcium diet. No effect was observable when the dietary calcium was high. Dietary calcium level influenced the absorption of Fe and Co. Absorption was greater when the calcium level of the diet was high. The significance of these results with respect to the nature of the vitamin D effect on absorption of cations is discussed.
