1. Oxytetracycline and succinylsulfathiazole either alone orin combination cause an elevation of plasma cholesterol of weanlingmice fed a diet containing a saturated fat, cholesterol andcholic acid. When cod liver oil, a polyunsaturated fat, wassubstituted for the saturated fat, oxytetracycline was withouteffect.
2. Chlortetracycline under identical conditions depressedplasmacholesterol.
3. When a highly unsaturated fat or mixtureof highly unsaturatedfatty acids was included in a cholesterol-cholicacidfree diet, chlortetracycline produced a marked hypocholesterolemiceffect. In the presence of less highly unsaturated fats or fattyacidssuch as corn oil, corn oil plus lard, or linoleic acid, chlortetracyclineexerted no effect on plasma cholesterol.
