The Control of Filicidal Cannibalism by Vitamin B12

Lester Hankin

Biochemistry Department, The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, New Haven

The effect of adding crystalline vitamin B12 to the Bills breeding diet, in order to control filicidal cannibalism, has been investigated. A level of vitamin B12 comparable to that found in a diet supplemented with 3% of desiccated liver has been shown to be effective. Statistical analysis of the data has shown that it is the vitamin B12 component of the liver which provides the necessary factor in the control of filicidal cannibalism.
