Essential Fatty Acid Properties of Tuna, Herring and Menhaden Oils1

Tuna, menhaden and herring oils cured the dermal symptoms of EFA deficiency and stimulated growth of EFA-deficient rats when fed at a level of 10% in the diet.

It was shown that although severe dermal symptoms of EFA deficiency developed with feeding 200 mg of the above oils in the form of their ethyl esters, the growth rate was not affected. The content of acids of the linoleate family is estimated to be approximately 2% of these oils, using dermal symptoms of EFA deficiency as the criterion.
