1. During the first two weeks of pregnancy in the rat, markedstorage of fat and water occurs in the maternal carcass whilethere is little fetal growth.
2. At about the 15th day ofgestation, a definite decrease infat stores occurs and theretention of protein increases. Accompanyingprotein retentionthere are decreases in blood amino nitrogen,in hepatic alanine-glutamictransaminase and in the rate ofurea formation in liver slices.
3. It is suggested that growth hormone may be implicated inthe alteration in metabolism observed at about the 15th dayof gestation.
