The Concept of an "Appetite Quotient" for the Interpretation of Ad Libitum Feeding Experiments

K. J. Carpenter

Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen, Scotland

1. A method is put forward for calculating the food intake of ad libitum-fed rats, in terms of their body weight, as a measure for the detection of differences in their appetite, according to the treatment they are receiving.
2. In a calculated example, the "appetite quotient" of rats receiving a niacin-deficient diet is equal to that found with niacin-supplemented rations.

Manuscript received 30 July 1953.
