The Occurrence of a Calcinosis Syndrome in the Cotton Rat¹

The pathological alterations occurring in cotton rats affected by a calcinosis syndrome have been described. The similarity of these changes to those found in deficient guinea pigs has been discussed. The syndrome in cotton rats was manifested primarily by necrosis and calcification of the myocardium and skeletal muscle. Other organs may be similarly affected but the incidence and severity with regard to them were considerably less.

Although the severity and acuteness of the disease may be markedly increased by lowering the magnesium content of the diet, no microscopic evidence of magnesium deficiency was found. Histologic examination of various organs supported the results of previous studies in ruling out vitamin E deficiency as the cause of the calcinosis.
