Chronic Essential Fatty Acid Deficiency in Mice1

Five Figures

Arthur B. Decker, Dorothy L. Fillerup and James F. Mead

School of Medicine, University of California at Los Angeles

It has been shown that a state of chronic essential fatty acid deficiency may be produced in mature mice. In this state the external appearance is normal, but typical acute EFA deficiency symptoms, and possibly death, may be produced by the following stresses:

(1) Injuries (even minor); (2) pregnancy (the chronic EFA-deficient females are sterile); (3) x-irradiation.
