Investigation of Barcelona and Du Chilly Filbert Nuts

II. Isolation, Nutritional Evaluation and Amino Acid Distribution of Filbert Globulins1

S. C. Fang and Joseph S. Butts

Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Oregon State College, Corvallis

Sixteen amino acids were determined by microbiological assay in globulins isolated from filbert nuts. A sample of vitamin-free casein was analyzed and the results compared with values reported in the literature in order to judge the accuracy of these determinations.

The microbiological results were confirmed by growth experiments; namely, that these globulins are critically low in lysine and methionine.

1 The data in this paper are taken from a thesis presented by Sheng Chung Fang to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Oregon State College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Published as Technical Paper no. 568 with the approval of the Director of the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. Contribution of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry.

Manuscript received 16 February 1949.
