1. On a "synthetic milk" ration containing approximately 0.8%methionine (30% casein) the baby pig requires 0.1% choline inits diet.
2. It appears that in the young pig, as in the chick, the abilityof methionine to supply methyl groups for the synthesisof cholinefrom aminoethanol may be limited. The methioninerequirementof the baby pig must be established before thiscan be determined.
3. When the food intake is equalized cholinedoes not have agrowth stimulating effect.
4. Choline deficiencyin these baby pigs resulted in gross symptomsof unthriftiness, poor conformation (short-legged and pot-bellied),lack of coordinationin movements and a characteristic lackof proper rigidity inthe joints, particularly the shoulders. The pigs also showedtypical fatty infiltration of the liversand characteristicrenal glomerular occlusion and some tubularepithelial necrosis.
