Laying hens fed a purified diet with lactose as the carbohydrate ceased laying in one to two weeks after being placed on the diet. Thirty per cent fat in the diet corrected the deleterious effect of lactose on egg production. High levels of lactose appeared not to affect hatchability.
In metabolism studies high levels of fat in the diet resulted in lower blood galactose levels when galactose was administered orally.
