V. The Interrelation of Alpha-Tocopherol and Essential Unsaturated Fat Acids1

Alpha-tocopherol extends the effectiveness of suboptimal quantities of linolate in preventing or curing the essential fat acid deficiency syndrome in the rat. This sparing action has been shown using pure methyl linolate or sesame oil. Gammatocopherol also spares essential fat acid, in vivo.

The interrelation of tocopherol and linolate appears not to be restricted to the gastrointestinal tract, since feeding of these substances separately at 24-hour intervals still shows enhanced growth, as compared with either supplement by itself.

When tocopherol but no essential fat is fed to fat-deficient rats the deficiency symptoms are aggravated.
