1. The growth of rats on present-day good stock diets is characterizedby a progressive decrease in gain for each successive time intervalafter weaning.
2. Such data can be conveniently plotted asa straight lineif the logarithm of the weight and the reciprocalof time areused as coordinates. The formula is:
These findings are corroborated by numerousdata ofother investigators.
3. Neither natural variationin size of the animal nor artificialstimulation of growth ratecauses a deviation from the empiricalformula of growth. Whileinherent size of rats varies considerably, the slope of theplot (k of the formula) varies but little foreach sex in albinorats. In all cases where data for males andfemales are available, the ratio of k for males and k for femalesis constant within3%.
4. Deviations on diets suboptimal for growth are discussed.
