The Surface Area of Single Comb White Leghorn Chickens

H. H. Mitchell

(From the Department of Animal Husbandry, University of Illinois, Urbana)

The surface area of Single Comb White Leghorn chickens of both sexes may be predicted by the equation S = 8.19W.70% S being the surface area in square centimeters and W the body weight in grams. This formula is a distinct improvement over the Meeh formula, and apparently cannot be improved by the introduction of a factor defining nutritive condition. Except for the distribution by weight of the pullets and cockerels measured in this experiment, it would be profitable to devise separate prediction formulas for each sex.

Manuscript received 3 October 1929.
