Adaptation to a Low Calcium Intake in Reference to the Calcium Requirements of a Tropical Population

1. The standard allowances for the daily intake of calcium forchildren and adults as given by authorities in Europe and Americaare considered too high.
2. There is evidence of metabolicadaptation to a low calciumintake as shown by: (a) The lowamounts of calcium in the urinesof those on a low calcium intake,when compared with the amountsin the urines of those on a highcalcium intake. (b) The highpercentage of calcium retentionby growing children on about0.2 gm. of calcium daily.
3.Many skeletons of Ceylonese children and adults have beenweighed,and ten of these have been analyzed for moisture andash. Theamounts of calcium in the skeleton at different ages,and theamounts of calcium per kilogram body weight have beencalculated.
The amounts of calcium retained daily by children and adolescentsof different ages have been calculated from this.
4. Dailystandard allowances for children and adults are suggested.
