A method is described for estimating the minimum intake of ascorbic acid which will just maintain the tissues in a state of complete saturation.
Of seven subjects whose requirements have been studied by this method two required between 70 and 85 mg. of ascorbic acid to maintain tissue saturation, three required between 85 and 100 mg. and two required more than 100 mg. of ascorbic acid per day.
On the basis of body weight, the range in requirement to maintain complete saturation for these subjects was from about 1 to 1.6 mg. per kilogram per day.
Incidental observations on the pH of the urine, the effects of exercise, high environmental temperature and atropine are recorded.
