Hyperglycemic Effect of Amino Compounds Structurally Related to Caproate in Rats1

W. O. Caster and Sheran Bleecker2

Home Economics Nutrition, University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia 30602

The chronic feeding of small amounts (0.3–3% of diet weight) of certain amino derivatives of caproate resulted in hyperglycemia, an elevated glucose tolerance curve and, occasionally, glucosuria. Effective compounds included norleucine, norvaline, glutamate, {varepsilon}-aminocaproate, methionine, and leucine.

KEY WORDS: • caproate • norleucine • hyperglycemia • diabetes

1 Supported in part by grants from the National Dairy Council and the National Live Stock and Meat Board.

2 These data were taken from the M.S. thesis presented by Sheran Bleecker to the University of Georgia (1972).

Manuscript received 13 May 1974.
