Studies on the Potassium Requirement of the Laying Hen1

R. M. Leach, Jr.

Department of Poultry Science, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania 16802

A purified diet was used to estimate the potassium requirement of the laying hen. A level of 0.10% was found to support normal laying hen performance. Diets deficient in potassium resulted in reduced egg production, egg weight, shell thickness and albumen potassium content. Death, weakness, and inability to stand were also observed with the deficient diet. The possible explanations for the severe reduction in shell thickness associated with potassium deficiency are discussed.

KEY WORDS: • potassium deficiency • egg shell formation
