Labeled Casein as an Indicator of Inhibited Protein Digestion in Chicks Fed Raw Soybean Meal1

Musha Tamir, Rachel Bielorai and Eugenia Alumot

Division of Animal Nutrition, Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel

14C-labeled casein was prepared and incorporated into raw soybean meal (RS) diet to study the origin of the undigested protein fraction. The digestion of the labeled protein was followed one hour after feeding by determining the total and ultrafiltrable radioactivity of digesta along the alimentary tract of chicks fed RS and heated soybean meal (HS). The undigested casein concentration was three to four times higher in the jejunum and ileum of RS- than HS-fed chicks. The undigested protein fraction found in the intestine of RS-fed chicks resulted mainly from the inhibited digestion of dietary protein.

KEY WORDS: • digestion • soybean meal • casein
