Effect of Bound Gossypol on the Absorption of Iron by Rats1,2,

D. L. Herman and F. H. Smith

Department of Animal Science, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina 27607

The absorption of iron is decreased when bound gossypol is fed to rats. When 0.005, 0.12, 0.24, and 0.35% dietary bound gossypol was fed, iron absorption decreased linearly as the bound gossypol increased. As the level of dietary iron increased, iron absorption increased when expressed in microgram quantities and decreased when expressed as a percentage of the dietary iron ingested. Both free and bound gossypol in the liver increased with increases in dietary bound gossypol and decreased with increasing levels of dietary iron.
