Department of Pathology, All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi-16, India

The influence of protein deficiency on the phagocytic index of the reticuloendothelial system was measured in monkeys with the use of 32P-labeled E. coli. Protein deficiency resulted in depression of the phagocytic index. This may be responsible for the increased susceptibility of the malnourished host to infection.

KEY WORDS: • protein deficiency • reticuloendothelial system
