Taurine and Isethionic Acid: Distribution and Interconversion in the Rat1

R. Huxtable and R. Bressler

Department of Pharmacology, University of Arizona College of Medicine, Tucson, Arizona 85724

A colorimetric assay combined with a reverse isotopic dilution procedure has been used to measure taurine levels in certain rat organs. The distribution and metabolism of [1,2-14C]taurine and [G-3H]isethionic acid (ISA) have been studied in rats. A low conversion of taurine to ISA is seen in all tissues examined, but no evidence has been obtained for the reverse reaction. [G-3H]ISA undergoes extensive metabolism in the course of distribution. The highest concentration of activity from both substances is found in the heart, maximum activity being reached in 3 days for ISA and 4 days for taurine.

KEY WORDS: • taurine • isethionic acid
