The growth and exploratory behavior of 1-day premature rats obtained by cesarean section and nursed by foster dams were investigated. The premature rats were significantly smaller in body weight than the controls. The premature rats also exhibited significantly lower exploratory activities after 12 weeks of age. No differences were observed between the control and premature groups in frequencies of urination or defectation which were observed as expressions of emotionality. Age and size of rats at birth appear to be associated with subsequent growth and exploratory behavior.
