Preparative purification of natural vitamin K from human liver was accomplished by extraction, chromatography on silicic acid, extraction with Claisen's alkali, and several additional chromatographic methods. Ultraviolet absorption and mass spectrometry of the purified samples supported the presence of phylloquinone, MK-7, MK-8, MK-9, MK-9(H2), MK-9(H4), MK-10, MK-10(H2), MK-10(H4), and MK-11. The principal vitamins were phylloquinone and MK-7.
KEY WORDS: vitamin K menaquinones liver
