Synthesis of Tryptophan from 3-Indolepyruvic Acid by a Healthy Woman

A young woman achieved nitrogen balance when her tryptophan-free diet was supplemented with 0.5 g of 3-indolepyruvic acid daily. Nitrogen balance promptly became negative when the {alpha}-ketoacid was withdrawn.
