9-Octadecenoic Acid in Threonine-imbalanced Rats1, 2,
Department of Foods and Nutrition, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan 48823
To explore the means by which dietary elaidic acid can limit liver lipid accumulation in threonine-imbalanced rats, 14C-elaidic acid was given to animals prefed threonine-imbalanced diets containing elaidinized olive oil. 14C-oleic acid-dosed animals fed untreated olive oil as the diet fat served as controls. Tissue radioactivity was assessed 4 and 8 hours after gavage. Elaidic acid was excreted via the urine at a slower rate than oleic acid; however, it initially was incorporated into liver phospholipids and low density lipoproteins to a much greater extent than oleic acid. When 14C-elaidic acid was given to animals prefed untreated olive oil, it was distributed in the same manner as in the animals prefed elaidinized olive oil.
