Vitamin A Deficiency and Urinary Calcium Excretion in Rats1

M. Zile, H. F. DeLuca and H. Ahrens

Department of Biochemistry, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706

Vitamin A deficiency had no effect on serum calcium levels but decreased markedly the urinary excretion of calcium. Creatinine clearance and urinary protein levels were not altered by vitamin A deficiency. The decrease in urinary calcium occurred very early in the depletion period and was rapidly restored to normal by retinol administration. It is suggested that the urinary calcium changes in vitamin A deficiency may play a role in renal stone formation.

KEY WORDS: • vitamin A • urinary calcium
