To clarify the relationship between the nutritive value of dietary protein and the activity of kidney transamidinase of growing rats, growth rates, protein efficiency ratios and transamidinase activities were investigated in rats fed diets containing various amounts of three kinds of protein: egg albumin, casein and wheat gluten. The response curves of the transamidinase activities of each protein plotted against dietary protein intake were linear within a certain range of lower protein intake, and the slopes of straight portions in the curves were in proportion with those in growth curves and the maximum protein efficiency ratios, of the corresponding protein. There were no marked differences among the three dietary groups in the urinary excretion of creatinine plus creatine. The activity of kidney transamidinase was found to reflect the quality of dietary protein.
