Treatments designed to reduce accumulation of muscle fat which accompanies atrophy were studied in a line of genetically dystrophic chickens which had been specifically selected for early gross atrophy and rapid accumulation of fat in the pectoralis muscles. These treatments consisted of: feeding high protein diets, restricting caloric intake, feeding of thyroprotein, and exercise. While all treatments were successful in retarding lipid accumulation, it could not be completely prevented. These treatments did not appear to influence the rate of atrophy; therefore, lipid accumulation may be modified independent of atrophy.
