A study was conducted with 36 premature infants to determine the effect of body weight 4 to 12 days after birth and supplementation with vitamin E on the distribution of lipids between plasma and erythrocytes. The infants were grouped into two groups, the larger (> 1600 g) and the smaller (< 1600 g). The larger infants responded to the addition of vitamin E by a significant rise in the red blood cell/plasma lipid ratio. In the smaller infants this did not occur.
