Biological Activity of 25-Hydroxyergocalciferol in Rats1

T. Suda, H. F. DeLuca and Y. Tanaka

Department of Biochemistry, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706

25-Hydroxyergocalciferol is 1.5 times more effective than either vitamin D2 or D3 in curing rickets in rats (60 units antirachitic activity per microgram). It is effective in inducing intestinal calcium transport and mobilization of bone mineral in rats and acts much more rapidly in these two systems than does vitamin D2.

1 Published with the approval of the Director of the Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station. Supported by the Harry Steenbock Research Fund of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and a Public Health Service grant AMO-5800-08. We are indebted to Mr. Lloyd Hein, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, for some of the "line test" assays. Abbreviations: 25-HCC, 25-hydroxycholecalciferol; 25-HEC, 25-hydroxyergocalciferol.

Manuscript received 6 February 1970.
