-Amino-
-Hydroxyvaleric Acid in the Nutrition of the Young Chick
U. S. Plant, Soil and Nutrition Laboratory, Soil & Water Conservation Research Division, Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Ithaca, New York
Studies have been conducted on the role of L-
-amino-
-hydroxyvaleric acid (L-AHV) in the nutrition of the young chick. The addition of this amino acid to an arginine-deficient diet containing casein resulted in a significant improvement in growth rate. The effect appears to be specific for the amino acid pattern of casein since the effect was not observed with a normal amino acid diet deficient in arginine. The mode of action of AHV may be similar to that observed with the nonmetabolizable amino acid
-aminoisobutyric acid which results in a growth response and reduction in kidney arginase activity under similar dietary conditions.
