The combination of cobalt and ethanol in their drinking fluid reduces the growth rate of rats significantly more than would be expected if the effects were merely additive. Furthermore, the hearts of these rats were significantly smaller and contained more zinc. Both cobalt and ethanol when administred separately or together increased the ratio of heart weight (wet) to body weight. The ratio of (dry) heart weight to body weight increased in the combination group relative to the groups that received water or alcohol.
