Pyridoxine Effects on Cystathionine Synthase in Rat Liver1

The livers of rats fed a pyridoxine-deficient diet had reduced specific activities of methionine-activating enzyme, cystathionine synthase, cystathionase, and betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase. When we added pyridoxal phosphate in vitro, the activities of cystathionine synthase and cystathionase increased while the levels of the other two enzymes remained unchanged. Cystathionase is a pyridoxal-dependent enzyme. We suggest that cystathionine synthase also requires this cofactor.
