Histopathology of Zinc-deficient Fetal Rats1

Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island 02912, and Department of Nutrition, University of California, Davis, California 95616

The histopathology of full-term zinc-deficient fetuses with a high incidence of congenital malformations was studied. The congenital anomalies were found to consist of stunting and tissue defects devoid of necrosis and inflammation. A mucosal lesion of the esophagus occurs in all such embryos and is sufficiently characteristic to serve as an indicator of the deficiency state. It is the fetal counterpart to the esophageal lesion seen in zinc-deficient adult animals. Somewhat similar fetal mucosal lesions are found in the tongue, pharynx and forestomach.
