1. Young white rats (65 to 75 gm.) were maintained upon a diet, whose limiting factor was a calorific one.
2. When extra caloriesin the form of inulin from chicory, sucrose,or fructose weresupplied as a supplement to the basal diet, the rate of growthwas increased. The utilization of inulinunder these experimentalconditions, as measured by the responsein growth, was distinctlyinferior to that of sucrose or fructose.
3. Inulin could notbe effectively utilized by the young whiterat as the sole sourceof carbohydrate since the marked intestinalfermentation ofthe polysaccharide caused distention of theintestine and usuallydeath within a few days.
